2-Day Workshop: Kesselskramer, Freddy Taylor – Do2

03.11.14

Freddy Taylor of Kesselskramer ran a product design-based workshop as an extension of Kesselskramer’s Do project. This involved the creation of products, which only become complete through user interaction. The most famous example of these is a steel ‘chair’ which is sold as a steel cube and a sledgehammer. The user creates their own unique chair by hitting and denting the cube with the sledgehammer, forming a one-off piece which they personally contributed to the creation of. The workshop looks at participatory design and user-interaction with the classic tongue-in-cheek Kesselskramer attitude.

Some examples from the workshop include the Do Rug – the pattern of which only becomes complete through wine and food staining the unblemished typography in the middle. Another animal–centred example was the Do Birdhouse, a birdhouse encased in bird seed which the birds can only reach by eating their way through – providing both food and shelter. Another simple response was the D0 Highfive! a participation-based installation brought to life by passers by slappin’ one up!
